What does URSI mean in RESEARCH

The Undergraduate Research Summer Institute (URSI) is an 8-week program designed to provide experiential learning to undergraduate student through research mentored by faculty. During URSI, students are given the opportunity to hone their research skills as well as develop their communication and presentation skills. Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a certificate of completion.

URSI is open to all undergraduate students outside of their graduating year. Applicants must have maintained a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in order to be considered for program acceptance.

The program requires students to make a commitment of 40 hours/week for 8 weeks over the summer months, with an additional two weeks dedicated to developing intellectual property agreements and filing patent applications. During this time, students will work with faculty mentors on research projects they identify at the start of their URSI experience. Students will also be enrolled in five credit-hours worth of directed study courses that include laboratory technique and methods workshops, ethics seminars and professional development talks from industry experts.

Applications for URSI can be completed online on our website or by mailing in a paper application form found on our website as well. Along with your application you will need to submit your transcripts, resume and letters of reference from faculty members familiar with your academic work and/or co-curricular involvement.

Applications must be submitted no later than April 1st of each year for admission into that upcoming summers program cycle.

After you have applied, we will review your submission materials and let you know whether or not you have been accepted into our program within two weeks following April 1st each year.

All admitted students into URSI are provided stipends that cover living costs during their eight weeks in residence at our institute campus located near Malibu beach California. All travel costs associated with attending URSI are covered by the participating institution on behalf of its accepted student participants as well as all course materials necessary for success throughout the duration of our institute experience provided free-of-charge alongside access to our library resources.
