Job Description

The Underwater Mechanic 3rd Class Petty Officer (UM3) is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, repairing, overhauling, and installing electrical/mechanical/hydraulic/pneumatic systems aboard Navy ships and submarines. The UM3 must be knowledgeable in all facets of mechanical engineering, including engine maintenance, electrical engineering, electronics troubleshooting, operation of auxiliary power systems, corrosion control practices, welding/brazing methods and principles of hydraulics/pneumatics. Additionally, the UM3 oversees machinery as directed by the supervisor to ensure it operates safely and performs properly.

Duties & Responsibilities

As an Underwater Mechanic 3rd Class Petty Officer (UM3), duties include performing divers’ maintenance on both preventive maintenance tasks as well as corrective maintenance such as testing pumps; calibrating engines; inspecting valves; checking for oil leaks; replacing hydraulic or pneumatic hoses; rewiring components; running pipe lines at depth on ship’s structure; cleaning electrical contacts on electronic boards; replacing sonar bulbs or transducers; evaluating faulty pieces of equipment or components sent to them by other units for repair; removing fouling from hulls; performing anchoring tasks at sea or in port facilities using specialized tools such as hand tools such as wrenches and pliers.
