What UGCC stands for
UGCC stands for Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, a denomination within the Eastern Church structure of Catholicism - which includes both Eastern Orthodox and Latin rites. It is an autocephalous church with its own hierarchy headed by a major archbishop at its See in Kyiv, Ukraine. UGCC's jurisdiction extends beyond Ukraine to many countries across Europe, North America, Australia and beyond.
History
The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church traces its origins back to 1596 when King Sigismund III Vasa reunited Rus'-Ukraine with the Latin See of Rome on Union terms. This agreement established union between Rome and Constantinople creating the Unified Ukrainian Greek Catholic or ‘Uniate' church that was distinct from both Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. Throughout history UGCC experienced periods of persecution due to religious differences between Latin Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. Despite this, UGCC remains one of the largest and oldest Christian churches in Ukraine today as well as having many followers worldwide.
Beliefs & Practices
As an orthodox member of the larger Roman Catholic tradition, UGCC affirms traditional beliefs such as belief in the Trinity (God Father-Son-Holy Spirit) and veneration for saints. They also practice popular devotional practices such as praying the Rosary or Divine Liturgy based on the Divine Office followed closely by all members of the Roman Catholica communion - including Pope Francis himself. However they are also distinct from other branches; including their practice of using leavened bread instead of unleavened bread during Eucharistic celebrations and permitting married priests to serve as bishops provided they remain chaste while married (contrary to most other branches).
