History

The story behind the UAZ begins in 1944 when a Soviet government decree authorized production of an all-purpose off-road vehicle for use by the Red Army. This would eventually lead to the development of the UAZ model 469, which first rolled off the assembly line at Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant in 1965. For almost 40 years following this initial release, the factory kept its original design and specifications. During this time period various variants were developed based on this model such as civilian passenger cars, pickup trucks, off-roaders, vans as well as military versions.

Design

The UAZ 469 series was designed with an emphasis on reliability and durability rather than power or speed. The body of the vehicle was built out of stamped sheet steel with parts welded together for strength and rigidity. The engine is a 2153 cc petrol four-cylinder engine producing around 56 hp at 4000 rpm. This engine allowed it to climb steeper slopes while still maintaining reasonable fuel efficiency ratings despite its wide tires and weighty construction materials. The front axle plus the rear two axles offer good traction on most terrain surfaces though all three axles are rigid instead of independent like many modern SUVs today.
