What does BEB mean in NURSING

The exact cause of BEB is unknown, but there are some factors that may contribute to its development, such as certain medications, emotional stress, fatigue and sun exposure.

Symptoms of BEB typically include excessive blinking (blepharospasm), involuntary eye closure (closure blepharospasm) accompanied by twitching or spasms in other muscles around the eyes including forehead, nose, mouth and neck.

Diagnosis for BEB is primarily based on clinical history and examination by an ophthalmologist or neurologist. In some cases additional tests such as blood tests or brain scans may be necessary to rule out other conditions that may mimic the symptoms of BEB.

Treatment for BEB can vary depending on severity and individual response to treatment options. Non-invasive treatments such as botulinum toxin type A injections into the eyelid muscles can reduce spasms as well as other medications such as benzodiazepines or muscle relaxants which work to reduce tension in the facial muscles of people with this disorder. Other more invasive treatments like muscle surgery or electrical stimulation may also be recommended if these treatments do not provide relief from the symptoms.
