Binswanger's disease (also known as subcortical vascular dementia) is a type of dementia that affects the deep structures of the brain and is caused by long-term damage to the blood vessels.

The symptoms of Binswanger's disease include memory problems, difficulty concentrating, slowed physical movements, impaired speech, changes in personality and behavior, difficulty controlling emotions, difficulty walking or balancing, and weak reflexes.

People who are at risk for developing Binswanger's Disease include those with high blood pressure or other vascular risk factors such as diabetes or hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). Other factors such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption have also been associated with an increased risk for this condition.

Diagnosis of Binswanger's Disease may involve neurological examinations, blood tests to check for vascular diseases such as stroke or infections such as HIV/AIDS, psychological tests to assess memory function and thinking ability, imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans to measure structural changes in the brain, and lumbar puncture (spinal tap) if necessary.

Treatment typically includes medications to control symptoms such as depression or hallucinations; lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise; physical therapy; speech therapy; occupational therapy; supportive counseling; psychotherapy; recreational activities; and support from family members. It may also involve strategies designed to minimize stress on patients with dementia.
