The airport was originally built in 1942 by the US Navy as Naval Air Station Isla Grande during World War II; it later became civilian-owned under the government of Puerto Rico. In 1967, it was renamed Antonio R. Barceló International Airport after Antonio Rafael Barceló (1884–1976), a former Senator from Puerto Rico who served as public works commissioner during the 1950s. In 1980, its name was changed again to José Aponte de la Torre International Airport (or Aéropuerto Internacional José Aponte de la Torre) until 2003 when President George W Bush signed legislation renaming it San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (also known by its IATA code TJSJ).
