A thyroid function test (TFT) is a blood test that measures the level of thyroid hormones (TSH, T3, and T4) in the bloodstream. This test helps diagnose and monitor any abnormal production or lack of hormone production related to the thyroid gland.

Thyroid function tests can be performed for a number of reasons, such as to check for signs of hypothyroidism (low levels of hormones), hyperthyroidism (high levels of hormones), or thyroid dysfunction due to medications you may be taking. The results from the test will indicate whether your hormone levels are within normal range or if there is an imbalance that needs to be addressed through treatment. Abnormal lab values could signal either hyperthyroidism (too much hormone) or hypothyroidism (too little hormone).

To prepare for your Thyroid Function Test you should make sure not to take your multivitamins at least 24 hours before the procedure since high doses can interfere with your results. Additionally, fasting before the test can help improve accuracy since eating certain foods can affect hormone levels in your body.

During this procedure your healthcare provider will draw some blood from either an artery in your wrist or from a vein on the inside of your elbow using sterile conditions and special equipment. After drawing blood it will then be sent off to the laboratory for analysis.

Once the sample has been sent off to the laboratory it typically takes several days before you receive your results back from them regarding your Thyroid Function Test. Your healthcare provider will go over these results with you when they become available.

The risks associated with having this test done are minimal since it only requires taking some blood samples which don’t pose many risks aside from mild soreness in the area where blood was taken after it has healed up completely. Additionally, there is no radiation exposure during this procedure so it is considered safe overall.
