What is TEKS?

The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) are a set of curriculum standards that define what information and skills students are expected to acquire at each grade level in their education. The TEKS include a scope and sequence for teaching academics, physical education, health, technology applications, fine arts, economics, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies/history, career preparation courses such as Agriculture Science & Technology (AS&T), Business & Finance Education (BFE), Early College High School Program (ECHS) plus more than 20 additional CTE program offerings. The TEKS provide teachers with a clear guide for instruction as well as assessment standards that students can use to measure their progress toward mastering specific content areas.

How Does the TEKS System Work?

The TEKS system is divided into various sections based on grade level or subject matter; each section contains foundational knowledge and skills required for mastery of certain concepts or topics of study. For example, the Social Studies/History section will contain content relating to government structure, ancient history, U.S. History from Reconstruction onward, world geography and culture plus more than 25 other units of study at each grade level from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. With this framework in place, educators have a toolbox they can draw from when implementing unique lesson plans tailored to fit student learning needs while also providing a clear standard for ensuring professional development goals are being met across all areas of study including English Language Arts/Reading & Writing; Mathematics; Science; Social Studies/History plus many others included within the state-approved curriculum guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
