Founded in 1982 by Merlin Tuttle, BCI began as “Bat Research News” with the vision of protecting bats through research and education. Over time, Bat Research News grew into a full-fledged organization dedicated to conserving bats across every continent except Antarctica. In 2013, BCI received recognition from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a member of Ursidae – International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas – Species Survival Commission (WCPA-SSC). This was followed by accreditation from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2017.
