What does BCHS mean in SOCIETIES

The Buffalo County Historical Society (BCHS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and educating citizens about local history. By collecting, displaying, and understanding artifacts and documents from the area, BCHS hopes to give its members a better understanding of our past.

The society preserves a variety of artifacts from all eras in Buffalo County’s history. These include photographs, maps, newspapers, clothing, books, oral histories, household appliances and furniture, weapons, textiles and more.

Individuals who have historical materials or objects related to the history of Buffalo County may consider donating them to BCHS. Those interested should contact the society for more information on how to proceed with donation of items.

To inform and teach members about the area’s past, BCHS offers educational programs such as archival talks/lectures, exhibitions at their museum location and through their website with online resources that are available year-long. Additionally they hold annual events like “Days of Yesteryear” where visitors can learn firsthand from costumed interpreters representing different characters from the county's past.

Yes! There are many ways you can get involved with BCHS as a volunteer. You could help with curating collections by cataloging artfacts or photographing items for digital records; assist in educational programming by reenacting as a historic figure or interpreting stories at one of their many events; support annual projects like creating an updated family tree database; work at the museum sites welcoming guests or even helping out with administrative tasks like filing paperwork or fundraising activities.

Unfortunately, due to limited staff resources research requests cannot be filled directly by BCHS but they do maintain numerous resources accessible through their library which individuals may use when researching family genealogies or general topics relating to local history. In addition staff may be able direct researchers toward other sources that may be able provide them with assistance when needed

Although we promote membership among individuals residing within our county boundaries anyone regardless of address is allowed join us as part as our extensive network. We welcome those who appreciate local history to become part of our journey in preserving heritage.
