What does BCG mean in CERTIFICATIONS & DIPLOMAS

The Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) is a membership organization that certifies and promotes genealogical excellence and ethical standards in the field. BCG's mission is to ensure the quality, accuracy, and integrity of genealogy research by providing education, testing, credentialing, and guidance in genealogical research methods. BCG also promotes professional conduct among genealogy professionals and offers accreditation programs for organizations that provide genealogy services.

Professionals who have demonstrated proficiency in the practice of genealogy as evidenced through their research, writing, teaching or other activities may apply for certification through BCG.

Yes. Applicants must hold a professional degree in a relevant field such as history, library science/information studies, archives management, anthropology or related disciplines; possess at least three years of documented experience; adhere to a code of ethics; submit specimens of published or unpublished research that reflect proficiency in conducting research and analyzing information; and pass an exam designed to test knowledge and skills related to the practice of genealogy.

The application fee is $350 USD if you are already a member of BCG. If you are not currently a member, there is an additional fee of $35 USD for membership in addition to the application fee.

Yes. Certificants must demonstrate ongoing active learning by completing 30 credit hours every five years through online courses approved by BCG or approved Continuing Education classes offered at conferences. Certificants must also complete 10 hours per year devoted specifically to ethical issues related to their profession including applicable laws in areas such as copyright law and privacy protection.

Yes. Candidates who fail either part of the exam may be retested by submitting new applications with updated information as well as payment of a retest fee within one year after failing the initial exam at no additional charge with proof they have attended continuing education courses related to Genealogical Research during this time frame.

Your certification will become inactive or lapsed if you do not renew your certificate within five years after passing the examination or one year due to nonpayment of dues and fees owed. An inactive certificant who wishes to reactivate their credentials must reapply under current procedures and demonstrate continuous involvement with genealogy-related activities during this time period such as teaching classes on methodology or attending conferences demonstrating familiarity with recent advancements in technology used by professionals engaged in research like DNA analysis.

Once you become certified by BCG, you will be issued with two diplomas attesting your accomplishments – one suitable for framing which indicates your name along with dates associated with your efforts - original date when certified followed by designation proclaiming yourself as CG (Certified Genealogist), Additional framed document also outlines cycle numbers associated with continued efforts toward gaining 5-year renewal status along with contingent points earned across said cycle.
