What TBC Is All About

The Teen Biotech Challenge (TBC) is all about encouraging innovation among teens while expanding their knowledge into the field of biotechnology - a science which has a wide range of applications ranging from medical solutions to sustainable energy sources. Every year, TBC hosts different challenges for teens across four key categories: Life Sciences & Medicine; Energy & Environment; Agriculture & Food; and Emerging Technologies & Robotics. Through these competitions, teens gain valuable experience exploring new technologies that impact our lives every day, develop an understanding of how these technologies work and discover ways that they can use to help find solutions to complex global issues such as climate change or food security.

How It Works

The Teen Biotech Challenge is open to all teenagers aged 13-19 from around the world. Participants form teams or join existing ones online through their local educational institutions or through social media groups like Facebook or Google Classroom Groups. Each team can include up to five members and once formed, teams have six months complete working on projects relating to one of the four categories as mentioned above - Life Sciences & Medicine; Energy & Environment; Agriculture & Food; and Emerging Technologies & Robotics - before submitting their project proposals online in written format along with a brief introductory video (for some challenges). Once submitted, teams will receive feedback from judges who will assess projects based on criteria such as innovation potential, scientific rigor/accuracy as well as presentation quality. Teams that stand out will then be invited by TBC via Skype or Zoom sessions for further engagement where they may be asked questions about their projects and have an opportunity for further assessment. Successful teams may then progress to the semi-finals or even finals rounds depending on the challenge category where they could potentially win awards ranging from cash prizes to scholarships!
