What does TAE mean in MEDICAL

TAE stands for Transcatheter Arterial Embolization, which is a minimally invasive procedure used to prevent the flow of blood in a targeted artery.

During TAE, doctors use imaging techniques such as ultrasound, X-ray angiography, or computed tomography (CT scan)to determine the location of the target artery and guide access. A small catheter is then inserted through a small incision in the skin and threaded into the target vessel. Eventually, small particles are injected into the vessel to block its blood supply.

TAE can be used to treat aneurysms, tumors, varicose veins and other vascular disorders. It may also be used for palliation of pain from metastatic cancer located near arteries or arteriovenous malformations.

There are risks associated with any medical procedure and embolization is no exception. Some potential risks include infection at the site where the catheter was inserted; injury to nearby structures; local bleeding; allergic reactions to contrast material used during imaging; radiation exposure from X-ray technologies; organ damage due to over-embolization; clots forming in freshly embolized vessels; and elevation of certain liver enzymes.

Recovery time varies depending on individual circumstances but typical times range from one week up to one month. During this period of recovery, it's important that individuals follow their doctor's instructions carefully in order ensure proper healing.
