History

The origins of SWAPO can be traced back to 1959 when it was founded as a unionist-oriented organization called Ovamboland People’s Congress (OPC). It was based in Windhoek, Namibia and initially had little support outside of Ovamboland region. However, during the 1960s, with international pressure increasing against South Africa’s occupation of what was then called Southwest Africa, OPC gradually transformed into a liberation movement known as South West African People’s Organization or SWAPO. This rebranding helped it gain more and more support from a wider range of people who had begun to reject colonial rule. In 1966, SWAPO declared its intention to launch an armed struggle against South African forces which eventually developed into decades-long guerrilla war known as the Namibian War Of Independence or "Bush War". By the late 1980s, both sides had reached an agreement to end their conflict and allow for free elections in 1989 where SWAPO emerged victorious and officially gained control over independent Namibia. Since then it has been at the helm of government ever since!

Role Today
