The Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport opened in 1949 as the Sebastopol Airport. In 1954,the name was changed to Sonoma Valley Airport when it experienced its first major expansion initiated by the county board of supervisors. After undergoing further renovations throughout the 1960s,the airport was renamed again this time to honor Charles M. Schulz in 2000 after his passing away earlier that year at age 77 due to complications from colon cancer. The renaming occurred in recognition of his immense contribution to American culture with his creation impactful comic strip Peanuts that ran from 1950 until his death in 2000 creating a legacy spanning generations .
