The first Bricks by the Bay event was held in April 2011 and was started by five members of the Bay Area Lego User Group (BALUG) who had combined their love of building with their enjoyment of conventions, hosting this passion-filled convention annually ever since. Ever since then it has grown exponentially every year; from 20 attendees to more than 270 participants attending each year from all across North America. The convention features various intriguing activities including mechanical robotics build challenges, discussion panels by professional builders on topics related to LEGO such as engineering techniques/strategies for building large structures and creative approaches to design elements within builds. Additionally, BBTB holds various contests such as Best Overall Builders Awards given out to outstanding MOCs (My Own Creation) or commissioned work done by suppliers at the show; awards are given out both financially as well as knowledge prizes that include educational experiences within the field of brickbuilding or other disciplines related to it.
