History

The San Pedro Peninsula Youth (SPPY) program was established by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in 1975. SPPY was designed to give local youth access to recreational activities such as sports teams, tutoring, music lessons and other enrichment programs in order to keep them involved in civic life as well as off the streets. It began with five LAUSD high schools connecting over 200 students from 8th-12th grade and has grown into an organization that serves over 25 schools throughout the region.

Programs & Services

SPPY provides a variety of programs and services that are tailored to meet the needs of its diverse population. These include after school programming which includes tutoring services, athletic leagues, college prep classes, art classes, summer camp programming for children from low-income families and workforce development programs for adults aged 18-24 year olds looking for employment opportunities. Additionally, SPPY also offers assistance with access to medical care as well as referrals to counseling services if needed.

Benefits

The benefits of being involved with SPPY go beyond just providing fun activities for its members – it also builds positive relationships between peers while promoting healthy lifestyle habits such as exercise and sportsmanship among youth living in underserved communities. By engaging these young people in educational activities they gain the necessary social skills which can be beneficial when it comes time for college applications or job interviews. Furthermore, having access to professional mentors helps them form meaningful connections which can lead to successful career paths in life outside of school or other areas of interest they may have developed during their time within SPPY’s programming.
