What does SOD mean in ONCOLOGY

Individuals with SOD may have vision loss in one or both eyes, as well as experience seizures, developmental delays, and hormonal imbalances. In more severe cases, some individuals may experience intellectual disability or even autism.

The exact cause of SOD is not known, however research suggests that genetic factors are involved. In some cases, there may be an underlying genetic condition involved in the development of SOD such as Chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome. Additionally, environmental factors such as exposure to alcohol or drugs during pregnancy may also play a role.

Diagnosis typically involves physical examination, imaging tests to determine if any parts of the brain have not developed properly and a series of blood tests to check for hormone levels. In more severe cases, physicians may request an electroencephalogram (EEG) to measure electrical activity in the brain.

There is currently no cure for SOD but treatment plans can be tailored depending on each individual's needs and symptoms. Treatment focuses on managing any complications related to vision loss or hormone imbalances through therapies such as occupational therapy and speech therapy that aim to improve functioning in areas affected by SOD. Additionally, medications can be prescribed to manage seizures and other neurological issues.

Support can be found from many different organizations dedicated to raising awareness about SOD including NORD (National Organization for Rare Disorders), Little Heroes Foundation, SEPTO - Special Education Parent Teacher Organizations (SEPTOs),and Starbright Foundation among others that offer resources and support materials specifically designed for individuals living with rare disorders like SOD.
