Stanford’s Laptop Orchestra (SLO) is a student-run ensemble dedicated to exploring new kinds of interactive music and real-time multimedia performance. The orchestra consists of up to 18 computer laptops, smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices. SLO incorporates an amalgam of live sound processing, traditional acoustic instruments, theatrical elements, motion sensing technology, visual projection mapping and more.

What types of events does SLO host?

SLO hosts a variety of concerts throughout the year both on campus and off. We also collaborate with other art forms such as dance performances and theatrical pieces to create unique multimedia experiences. Additionally we hold workshops in which students learn about interactive music creation techniques with technology, and guest lectures from professionally engaged composers and performing artists.

What kind of music do you play?

We perform pieces that span many genres including classical, jazz, pop, electronic/dance music, world music, experimental improvisation and much more! Our repertoire consists of pieces composed or arranged for laptop ensemble by members in our group as well as other composers from around the world.

Are there any auditions or requirements to join SLO?

Yes! We hold auditions at the beginning of every academic quarter which are open to all Stanford students regardless of experience or background. All auditions require preparation in advance; more detailed information will be sent out directly before each audition period.

Does SLO provide its own equipment for rehearsals?

Yes! All members have access to our shared computer setup which includes Macbook Pros loaded with a variety software packages like Ableton Live Suite 10 & Max/MSP 7 and interfaces such as midi controllers & audio interfaces that are necessary for rehearsal & performance use.

How much time commitment is expected from members?

It depends on your availability and level of involvement in any given project but generally we ask that all members attend weekly rehearsals during the academic quarters along with select gigs throughout the school year.
