Definition

SIBF stands for Singapore International Band Festival, which started in 1998 as part of the Esplanade’s effort to create a vibrant music scene within the city-state. As it has grown over the years, it now attracts bands from all over the world to come together to celebrate music through performances showcasing different cultures and genres. It is well-known for its amazing lineup of international music acts from both professional bands and new artists alike.

History

The first edition of the festival took place in 1998 and had around 15 bands participating from countries such as Japan, Thailand, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia and Singapore itself. The intention was to foster an atmosphere of cooperation amongst regional musicians by creating networking opportunities between them. Since then it has seen tremendous growth with more than 300 bands across 30 countries coming together every year during the month long festival season located at different venues throughout Singapore like Esplanade Concert Hall, Esplanade Outdoor Theatre and other stages around Marina Bay area. It has also included free concerts with open seating at different public parks throughout the city as well as rehearsals and workshops for young aspiring musicians who wish to pursue music professionally in future.

Programming

SIBF features numerous events under its umbrella every year that are tailored for those looking to observe traditional island style musical performances or even participate in modern mixes jams like streetbeat parades where aspiring DJs compete against each other through their mix tunes on electronic instruments like turntables or keyboards while MCs rap along providing another layer of entertainment during these events. It also engages local talents by hosting band competitions categorized into genre such as rock or pop whereby contestants showcase their individual styles competing against each other selected by a panel comprised of judges from multiple fields including media experts, industry veterans like record label directors etc.. Additionally there are talks conducted by invited speakers speaking on topics related to various aspects of live music business surrounding copyright rights & royalties etc.. These activities are open to people from across ages so that everyone can experience something exciting with SIBF’s rich cultural offering every year!
