What does SHD mean in DISEASES

Structural Heart Disease (SHD) refers to any condition affecting the structure or function of the heart, including some forms of congenital heart defects and acquired conditions such as endocarditis or valve diseases.

Common symptoms associated with SHD may include shortness of breath, chest pain, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, dizziness or fainting spells, swelling in feet or ankles, and unexplained weight gain or loss.

Those who have certain health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, smoke cigarettes regularly; have a family history of heart disease; have an infection that affects the heart; have had open-heart surgery; are older adults; or use recreational drugs may be at higher risk for developing SHD.

To diagnose SHD doctors often perform tests such as echocardiograms and cardiac MRI scans which can show images of the inner structures of the heart. Diagnostic cardiac catheterization may be done to measure pressures inside your chambers. Blood tests may also be done to check levels for markers like troponins which help detect if there's been any damage to your heart muscle from a lack of oxygenated blood flow.
