What does SFP mean in PLANNING

The Society of Family Planning (SFP) is a global non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to quality family planning and reproductive health services, especially for women and girls. SFP works to ensure that every person in the world has the right and capacity to make informed decisions about their own reproductive health, including when and how many children they want to have.

The goal of SFP is to ensure that all individuals have access to comprehensive, safe and affordable family planning information and services. This includes empowering individuals with knowledge about sexual and reproductive health, preventing unintended pregnancies, reducing unsafe abortion practices, promoting gender equality, reducing maternal mortality rates, and eradicating communicable diseases.

SFP works with a range of partners in government, civil society organizations, local communities, healthcare providers, donors and other stakeholders. We use evidence-based programming to create innovative approaches that support our vision. Our strategies include advocacy with policy makers; professional development of clinicians; public awareness campaigns; building capacity in community-based service providers; working with vulnerable populations; providing technical assistance on national family planning programs; catalyzing investments in family planning research; and improving data collection systems.

SFP's activities directly benefit women and girls from around the world who lack access to comprehensive sexual education and contraception services. Our work also supports men who seek access to responsible parenthood information and contraceptives for their families. In addition, we provide interventions that benefit entire communities by helping improve education levels, economic opportunities and overall health outcomes related to reproductive health care.

SFP offers a range of initiatives such as developing evidence-based program models tailored for different contexts; training health workers on how best to provide proper family planning information and services; advocating for effective policies related to family planning at local, regional and international levels; focusing on monitoring programs so as identify gaps in access or coverage; conducting research into new technologies or innovations for improving contraceptive use among populations without access.

The Society has provided support for a variety of projects designed around making sure individuals can freely choose their own contraceptive methods according to their own needs. Examples include introducing cycle beads as a low cost option for menstrual cycle tracking in Zambia or providing vouchers enabling women living in poverty in Senegal gain improved access contraceptives like intrauterine devices (IUDs).
