What does SDH mean in SURGICAL

A subdural hematoma (SDH) is a collection of blood that forms between the outer covering of the brain and the dura mater, which is the middle layer of protective tissue covering the brain. It can occur due to head trauma or by itself in certain conditions.

Those with chronic diseases of the heart, liver, and lungs, as well as older adults and infants are most at risk for developing a SDH. It can also happen in people who take certain medications such as anticoagulants, which make it harder for blood to clot.

Symptoms of an SDH may include difficulty concentrating, headaches, nausea, vomiting, confusion or loss of consciousness. Depending on the location and size of the hematoma other symptoms may include seizures, paralysis on one side of the body or changes in vision or speech.

An SDH is diagnosed through imaging tests such as CT scans or MRI scans. Sometimes these tests can indicate if there has been bleeding and how much has accumulated.

Complications from an SDH can be very serious due to possible brain damage caused by increased pressure on the brain from swelling or fluid buildup caused by the accumulation of blood. When left untreated it can cause coma or death so treatment should be sought immediately if someone experiences any signs or symptoms associated with an SDH.

Treatment for an SDH will depend on its severity but usually involves draining away excess fluid using surgery or giving medications to reduce swelling and relieve pressure on the brain. Follow up treatments may also include physical therapy for those who have experienced paralysis due to their condition.

Prevention includes wearing helmets while playing contact sports; avoiding activities that involve rapid speed changes; taking steps to reduce falls among elderly people; adhering to safety standards when operating motorized vehicles; and following doctor’s instructions when taking medications that affect blood clotting time such as aspirin or anticoagulants like warfarin and heparin.
