What does SDG mean in DEVELOPMENT

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. They provide an agenda for nations to advance their development objectives through 2030.

All 193 member states of the United Nations have adopted the SDGs in 2015.

The SDGs were initially proposed by UN Member States as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was agreed upon at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015 as part of an ambitious global plan for combating climate change, achieving economic prosperity, ending extreme poverty, promoting human rights and protecting natural ecosystems.

The SDGS strive for sustainable solutions that promote economic growth while aiming to make our planet more resilient and equitable. The goals also seek to promote peace and justice, build strong institutions, reduce inequality, eradicate poverty and promote environmental protection among other objectives.

Member States have agreed upon a timeline of 15 years starting in 2016 up until 2030. During this time period they will work together to try achieve those 17 goals set by themselves by providing global solutions through robust policy frameworks backed with national plans with measurable targets within each goal.
