How Does SCUBA Work?

SCUBA works by using pressurized air tanks that are typically attached to a harness worn on the diver's back. This air is then delivered from the tank through a regulator which reduces the air pressure as it enters into a low-pressure hose that extends upwards from the tank and regulator set-up to a mouthpiece held by the diver. Through this system, breaths are taken normally while underwater, allowing for safe exploration of aquatic habitats.

The external tanks allow for larger capacity than what would be achievable with simply inhaling air from your lungs while diving (which can lead to uncontrollable rapid breathing). An additional advantage of this system is that if more air is needed mid-dive (more depth = more pressure = less oxygen), you can use your buddy system or other emergency measures to ensure safe breathing throughout your dive journey.

Safety when using SCUBA should always come first - both above and below the water's surface. Proper training must be completed before attempting any dives in order to understand how equipment works and how best to keep yourself safe while diving.
