What does SASD mean in SURGICAL

The State Ambulatory Surgery Database (SASD) is a collection of data from outpatient surgical procedures in the United States for a particular state that allows hospitals, administrators and policy makers to review, analyze, and study the frequency, quality and cost of ambulatory surgery provided in sites outside the operating room.

The SASD contains detailed information on individual ambulatory surgery visits such as patient characteristics (age, gender), diagnosis codes, procedure codes, occurrence codes for complications or events within 30 days following discharge from an ambulatory surgical visit together with economic information including total payments made by private insurance or public programs on behalf of patients undergoing ambulatory surgery.

Access to the SASD is limited to researchers who must be affiliated with an approved institution with expertise in healthcare research. Institutions must apply annually to gain access to these databases.

Data included in the SASD are generally updated annually. However depending upon availability of resources it can sometimes take two years or more before new information is available.

Researchers can use this data for many purposes including assessing safety issues related to ambulatory surgery visits such as postoperative events or complications as well as examining patterns/trends of ambulatory surgery performed at different states across time periods. It can also be used for economic analysis such as examining costs associated with ambulatory surgery visits across different geographic regions within a state or comparing costs between similar procedures performed at different states within a region over time.
