Function

The SAGA enzyme complex consists of several subunits with distinct activities that work together to catalyze histone acetylation and modify chromatin structure. The components of the complex interact with each other to form a transition between active gene expression and inactive gene expression states. This process is known as “epigenetic regulation” since it helps regulate gene expression without changing the actual DNA sequences themselves. SAGA enzymes have been implicated in regulating diverse biological processes like embryonic stem cell differentiation, aging, neural development, organogenesis and even abnormal tissue transformation associated with cancer progression.

Role in Human Health & Disease

SAGA proteins play important roles in both human health and disease, especially regarding epigenetic regulation. Mutations or changes in the genes that encode these proteins can result in dysregulation of gene expression leading to diseases such as Huntington’s Disease or certain types of cancers like colon cancer or leukemia. Deficiencies in SAGA activity can also lead to developmental abnormalities or increased susceptibility to infection due to weakened immune responses since they modulate inflammatory cytokine production from immune cells like T-cells and macrophages. On the other hand, overactivity can result in uncontrolled growth or uncontrolled inflammation leading to autoimmunity or allergic diseases like asthma or eczema.
