History
The South Antrim Football League was founded in 1885 following an agreement between clubs representing Queen's Park FC, Glentoran FC, Belfast Celtic FC and Distillery FC. This agreement established the rules governing competition between these four clubs, the foundation of what is now known as the South Antrim Football League (SAFL). Since then, many more teams have entered the fray - often joining with others in order to form larger leagues. The current format allows 40 teams across two divisions compete for glory every season.
Format
The South Antrim Football League operates within a two-tiered system consisting of Divisions One and Two. Each division is made up of 20 clubs who are divided into 10 groups upon entering the competition - five in each division. The club at the top of each group automatically progresses into Division One while those at the bottom will be relegated down into Division Two for their next campaign. At this level there is also promotion/relegation between divisions but no relegation from Division Two as that would constitute dropping out of the league altogether.
Competition
Competition during any given season can be fierce due to SAFL's unique grouping system which pits teams from similar areas against each other from start-to-finish during any given campaign - creating intense rivalries and providing exciting moments throughout played games Week after week. This setup also means that each team plays every other team in their group twice (once home and away), making sure that no team dominates proceedings over another before every team gets an equal chance of lifting silverware come season's end!
Final Words:
The South Antrim Football League provides a competitive platform where local teams can battle against one another while fostering healthy rivalries along with some thrilling moments thanks to great matches between talented players over time! It's been around since 1885 and continues to go strong today — showing just how much work goes into ensuring success year after year both on and off the field!
