What does SABE mean in PHYSIOLOGY

Subacute bacterial endocarditis (SABE) is a rare form of endocarditis that can cause potentially life-threatening damage to the heart valves, leading to significant symptoms including fever, fatigue and signs of valve damage.

Symptoms of SABE include fever, fatigue, chest pain or discomfort, chills or night sweats, joint aches and pains. In some cases, more serious signs such as shortness of breath or cyanosis may be present.

People who have previously had rheumatic fever or damaged their heart valves through congenital defects or surgery are more likely to develop SABE. While the exact causes of SABE remain unknown, it tends to occur in those with weakened immune systems due to age or illness.

Diagnosis of SABE typically includes blood tests and imaging techniques such as echocardiograms and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These techniques allow your doctor to identify any damage caused by the infection and determine which treatment options will best suit your needs.

Treatment for SABE usually involves antibiotics administered intravenously for several weeks along with lifestyle changes such as giving up smoking and lowering cholesterol levels. Surgery may be required if the infection has caused extensive damage to heart valves. Other medications may also be prescribed to reduce swelling in any affected areas.
