History

Watertown Municipal Airport opened in 1953 with a single concrete runway measuring simply 3,500 feet long. Runway 14/32 was later upgraded to 5,000 feet long in 1972 after an extension was added from runway 4/22 due to increased demand from private charter flights within the region. Ten years later, additional improvements were made to accommodate commercial airline service; Runway 14/32 was extended once again to 6,000 feet long which helped attract commercial airlines such as Northwest Airlines Express in 1992 and Republic Airlines Express two years later. In 2008 a major renovation project began at RYV which included widening Taxiway C & D for improved access between hangars and Terminal E along with a new parking lot installation. These improvements were completed in 2014 after two years of construction work had finished up at the Watertown facility.

Current Operations

Currently there are five aircraft based on the field including three single engine airplanes (Cessna 172s) which are used for flight instruction and two twin engine turbine powered aircraft (Beechcraft Barons) used mainly by freight carriers or corporate travel operations. The airport consists of one terminal building labeled “Terminal E” a large outdoor parking lot that features cell phone waiting spots for those picking up passengers along with an overhead pedestrian bridge connecting both terminals A & B together through Terminal E granting access to Gate 7 where most commercial flights depart from or arrive at RYV. There are 3 full-service FBOs available situated around the airport offering fueling services fueling services among other aviation amenities like hangar storage, flight training etc… Passengers departing from RYV typically fly with American Eagle or SkyWest operating regional routes on either CRJ200 or Embraer ERJ-145 jetliners usually arriving into Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP) before connecting onto other destinations all over North America or internationally when traveling abroad away from Wisconsin’s third largest metropolitan area: Madison metro area nearby.
