History
The University of Richmond first fielded a football team in 1893 under head coach Frank Craighead. The team originally went by various nicknames such as "Colonials", "Gobblers", "Rams" and "Spiders". On April 18th 1895, after much debate among students and fans alike, the local newspaper reporter decided to christen them the 'Richmond Spiders' in a game against rival Virginia Tech. Since then, 'RSF' has become synonymous with ‘Spiders Football’; paying homage to their original nickname and history that precedes it.

The RSF program has had much success in its long history. Since joining the Atlantic 10 conference in 2001 they have won 3 conference titles (2008, 2013 & 2015).
