What does RSB mean in REHABILITATION

RSFB provides a wide range of services that can be customized to meet individual needs. These services include education and training programs in orientation and mobility, daily living skills, social and recreational skill development, assistive technology services, counseling, medical follow-up care, medical support services, transportation assistance, employment services and technical assistance.

Individuals who are legally blind or have low vision are eligible for RSFB services if they are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and meet certain income eligibility requirements. Eligibility also depends on age; individuals must be under 21 years of age to participate in most programs but there are some exceptions for individuals over 21 years of age who wish to pursue higher education or advanced vocational training.

To apply for RSFB services an individual must contact their local state rehabilitation agency or the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) at the US Department of Education (ED). An evaluation will be conducted to determine eligibility and individual needs prior to providing any formalized service plans.

Services provided through RSFB are provided free of charge as long as all eligibility requirements are met. However, there may be costs associated with obtaining assistive technology such as braille readers or specialized software programs. Those costs would not be covered by the RRB program but may be covered under other government or private funding sources depending on individual circumstances.

Depending on an individual's goals and job interests, RSFB may provide career exploration activities that can help identify potential jobs as well as direct job placement assistance once an applicant is ready for employment opportunities.
