What does RPH mean in HEALTHCARE

Radical Public Health focuses on dismantling oppressive systems of power through various strategies in order to promote healthier, more equitable communities. It looks at how different forms of oppression, such as racism and sexism, intersect with health disparities.

Practitioners use multiple strategies to address health disparities from an intersectional point of view. These may include direct action; advocacy for policy changes; coalition building; community engagement; and research into the underlying causes of inequality.

Unlike traditional public health approaches which emphasize individual behavior change within existing systems of power, RPH seeks to transform those systems themselves in order to create a more just social environment. It focuses not only on individual behaviors but also on larger structures and organizations that can shape access to healthcare and food security.

One example of how RPH has been used is the establishment of Food Not Bombs chapters around the world which provide free vegan meals to those in need while confronting systems which allow hunger and poverty to exist in the first place. Additionally, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance works towards improving maternal healthcare for people of color by recognizing structural racism as a root cause for poor outcomes among these groups.

There are many online resources available for learning about Radical Public Health including books, articles, webinars, and conferences specifically designed around this field of work. The National Association for Radically Transformative Practice is one such organization which provides educational materials about both theoretical and practical applications of Radical Public Health.
