History
The Ahnapee & Western began operations as a subsidiary of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway Company in 1895. Its main line connected several towns over approximately 130 miles of track stretching from Fish Creek in Door County to Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin's Door Peninsula region. In 1916, plans were made to extend the line all the way south through Michigan's Upper Peninsula to Iron Mountain and Peshtigo, Wisconsin but these plans were never completed due to lack of funding. Over time more branches were constructed radiating off from its main line including ones heading into Manitowoc and Kewaunee on Lake Michigan’s western shore as well as one into Oconto County in northeast Wisconsin. In 1947, AWZZ became an independent company when it was purchased by McCloud River Lumber Company which also operated other railroads across northern California at that time such as Sierra Northern Railway and Yreka Western Railroad. In 1955 Ahnapee & Western merged with the Wisconsin and Northern Railroad Company which continued to operate its lines until 1998 when McCloud Railway Corporation took over operations and still serves customers throughout this region today.
Significance
The Ahnapee & Western served an important economic role during its many years of operation by providing freight services to businesses located along its routes while also providing transportation for people living in rural areas where public transportation was not available at that time. It helped communities stay connected by allowing goods to be shipped between them while also making it easier for people living in these areas to travel around without having to rely solely on their own private means of transportations such as horse-drawn carriages or automobiles which were much too expensive for most people at that time period. Although AWZZ no longer exists under its original name today, its legacy lives on through McCloud Railway Corporation which continues providing freight services throughout this same region while helping connect local businesses with each other just like Ahnapee & Western did so many years ago.
