History

In 1993, the AWRR was acquired by Sanderson Farms Inc. from Union Pacific Railroad after they purchased the Missouri Pacific Railway. It operated operations on approximately 400 miles of track obtained from Union Pacific spanning three states, including Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. The AWRR provides rail services within these states as well as across national borders into Mexico and Canada. Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest railroads in Texas with its fleet consisting of diesel-electric locomotives and boxcars ranging from 3 feet to 60 feet in length.

Services

The AWRR provides full-service transportation solutions to customers throughout its vast network covering eight counties in central and southwest Texas. Its fleet includes flatcars, hoppers, open top gondola cars, tank cars and boxcars capable of transporting various commodities such as aggregates, chemicals, grain products (wheat and corn), foodstuffs (bakery products), lumber products (plywood) as well as other general freight items. Furthermore, AWRR also offers backhaul services enabling shippers to transport their merchandise from one destination to another over longer distances while saving on costs associated with long haul trucking services.

Expansion

Since its takeover by Sanderson Farms Inc., the AWRR has been investing heavily into network expansion projects with the aim of increasing operational efficiency while providing safer services for both employees and customers alike. This includes investments aimed at recruiting new staff to operate trains safely while increasing capacity through additional locomotives and track improvements; allowing more significant volumes of freight to be transported over shorter periods of time than ever before. In addition to this expansion efforts have also included structural modifications which have reduced train derailment rates by almost 50% since 2017 whilst lowering overall maintenance costs associated with regular upkeeps reducing outgoings substantially.
