History of the AWLA

During WW2, many Australian men enlisted in the armed forces, leaving women at home to fill their roles as agricultural workers and food producers. The AWLA was set up in 1941 to address this shortage of labour. The organization recruited female volunteers from cities and towns throughout Australia who could take on manual farm tasks such as ploughing, sowing, harvesting and milking cows. By 1945, more than 17,000 women had registered with the AWLA.

The volunteers worked under difficult conditions and often experienced discrimination due to their gender. Despite this, they managed to stay strong and continued working hard for their country until the war ended in 1945.

Making A Difference

The AWLA played a crucial role in ensuring that Australia had an adequate supply of food during WW2. Their efforts were so successful that most major cities were supplied with sufficient supplies despite wartime restrictions on shipping and trade. In addition to providing physical labour on farms, the AWLA also engaged in fundraising activities to help cover costs associated with running their organization.

This incredible initiative was led by strong-willed women who stepped up to protect their beloved country despite facing hostile working conditions and discrimination along the way. They truly made a difference!
