Essential Questions and Answers on Retired Greyhound Trust in "MEDICAL»VET"

What is the Retired Greyhound Trust?

The Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) is a registered charity in the United Kingdom that works nationally to secure loving homes for retired racing greyhounds. We provide advice, support and pet insurance for potential adopters, as well as guidance and expertise for those looking after retired greyhounds.

What are the benefits of adopting a retired greyhound?

Adopting a retired greyhound can offer numerous benefits. They are typically calm, friendly and loyal companions who form close bonds with their owners. As ex-racers they have often already been house-trained and socialised around other dogs. Plus, as they’re usually older than puppies, they tend to be considered neater and less destructive in their households!

How long does it take for me to adopt a retired greyhound?

The time it takes to begin the adoption process depends on several factors including when you first make contact with an RGT office and how quickly you can complete the home visit or questionnaire. Once your home check is successfully completed we aim to match you with a suitable retiree within 2 weeks.

How much does it cost to adopt a retired greyhound?

It costs £130 for an adult dog or £150 for a puppy aged under 12 months. This payment covers our general rehoming fee which contributes toward kennelling, vaccinations, chipping and all other costs associated with bringing your new companion into your life safely and securely.

Is there extra medical care needed for my adopted greyhound?

There may be some additional medical care needed depending on when your adopted Greyhound left racing but we will always advise if this is required prior to adoption if possible. Our expert veterinary team at RGT will assess each rescue before handing them over so rest assured that any necessary veterinary treatment is provided prior to adoption wherever possible.

Do I need experience owning animals before I adopt?

No previous experience owning animals is required; however we do look for adopters who have done some research about what it takes to welcome one of our rescued hounds into their home before applying!

Is there an age limit for adopting a retired Greyhound?

You must be over 18 years of age in order to apply for adoption through RGT but there is no upper age limit providing you have someone in the household who will take on responsibility of caring full time should this become necessary.
