Rapid Fluid Resuscitation (RFR) is a medical treatment used to quickly increase blood pressure, often in critically ill patients. It involves providing fluids intravenously to increase the volume of blood circulating in the body.

Patients who suffer from dangerously low blood pressure or other conditions that cause low blood circulation may be candidates for RFR. This includes trauma victims, bleeding ulcers, shock due to gastroenteritis, sepsis and heart failure.

Possible risks associated with RFR include fluid overload or electrolyte imbalance due to too much or too little fluid administered, air embolism from an improperly inserted IV line, and infection at the site of insertion.

After administring fluids via an IV line, increased circulatory volume and improved tissue perfusion can usually be seen within minutes. However, complete recovery can sometimes take several hours depending on how severely the patient was affected prior to treatment.
