Abduction refers to the process of inferring possible explanations or causes for a given phenomenon, based on the available evidence. The aim of abduction is to create logically valid conclusions that can help explain observed facts

Unlike deduction, which starts with established premises and reaches a conclusion based on those premises, abduction arrives at its conclusion through inductive reasoning. That is, it begins with individual observations, then considers various hypothetical explanations or causes that might account for those observations

Abduction can be used as a form of logical reasoning to explain any sort of phenomenon, from scientific discoveries such as Newton's Laws of Motion to everyday occurrences such as traffic patterns in a city

An example of an abductive argument is this one developed by Charles S. Peirce: "If there arewolves in London, then someone has seen them; but no one has seen them; therefore there are no werewolves in London." Another example would be if we observe that it's raining outside and assume that the cause was a passing thunderstorm

The validity of an abductive argument depends on whether the proposed explanation or cause is compatible with all known facts and reasonable assumptions. In other words, if an explanation accounts for all relevant evidence while avoiding any gaps or contradictions, then it can be considered valid
