What does REF mean in UNIVERSITIES

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is an independent and impartial assessment by leading experts of research quality in higher education institutions across the UK. It provides an authoritative view of the quality of research in each institution, determined through expert scrutiny of individual outputs and impact, alongside evidence submitted by the institution about its environment.

The REF occurs every six or seven years on a rolling cycle, with a new exercise commencing roughly every five years.
