What does REACT mean in STATES

REACT stands for Radio Emergency Associated Communication Teams. REACT consists of an organized group of radio amateur operators who are dedicated to providing public service and emergency communications. The organization has a national network of members that provide assistance with public service and emergency communications support, training, education, and leadership.

REACT provides a range of services to local, state, and federal agencies in the event of an emergency or disaster situation. These services may include setting up temporary communication networks in affected areas, relaying critical messages between agencies involved in recovery operations, providing support for search and rescue operations, supporting the transportation of relief supplies, helping to coordinate response efforts across multiple agencies and jurisdictions, as well as providing guidance on how to best utilize available communication resources in order to maximize efficiency during an emergency.

Yes, REACT is entirely staffed by trained volunteers who donate their time and services whenever needed. All members are registered Amateur Radio Operators (Hams) or personnel approved by the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

In order to become a member of REACT you must meet one of two criteria; either you must hold an Amateur Radio Operator’s license issued by the FCC or you must be part of a recognized public service agency such as law enforcement, fire department or disaster relief organizations that have been approved by the FCC. Additionally all applicants must submit a criminal background check prior to being accepted into the organization.

The majority of branches do charge an annual fee which covers membership dues along with any related equipment costs associated with maintaining communications capabilities within that branch's area(s) served; however some branches are entirely volunteer-based so there may be no fees during certain years depending on any individual branches particular circumstances.
