What does AWACS mean in UNCLASSIFIED
AWACS stands for Airborne Warning and Control Systems. It is a system of radar-equipped aircraft that are used to detect, identify, and track airborne objects such as other aircraft or missiles. AWACS allows military commanders to monitor the airspace over large areas of operation. It can be used for command and control, early warning, force protection, intelligence gathering, target tracking and identification, surveillance of hostile forces, close air support coordination, battle management and search and rescue operations. AWACS has become an integral part of modern air defense systems.

What is AWACS
AWACS is a complex system that combines airborne radars with computerized data processing equipment and powerful communication links to provide an enhanced situational awareness capability for military commanders on the ground or in the air. The combination of long range sensors mounted on aircraft provides the capability to detect and monitor enemy forces over vast areas without having to deploy ground based radars or other comparable systems. This extended operational range of AWACS makes it very attractive for battlefield command and control operations especially where terrain or political boundaries limit the use of more conventional ground based sensors.
How does it work
The system consists of several different components such as airborne active phased array radar with multi-mode tracking capabilities; data processing computers; communications subsystem; sophisticated software; display consoles; automatic plot extraction equipment; navigation systems; operator interfaces; power conditioning equipment; digital video recorders (DVR); tracking consoles; mission management consoles; voice/data selector panels; audio management systems; secure radio links for passing control orders in real time to tactical formations in the field below it. The operator’s station features multiple display consoles that show vector maps with aircraft positions superimposed on them along with detailed information about each individual participant in a mission. Additionally operators can also take control of individual friendly fighter jets using special controls from their station aboard the AWACS aircraft allowing them to coordinate close air support missions in real time from high altitudes above the action taking place below them.
AWACS has been used extensively during many major conflicts since its inception including Operation Desert Storm in Iraq, Operation Allied Force (Kosovo), Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) as well as smaller regional crises such as those involving Israel/Palestine conflict.
