History of The Ahnapee & Western Railway (AW)
The Ahnapee & Western Railway was incorporated on March 28th, 1888 in Appleton, Wisconsin as the Ahnapee & Western Railway Company by John A. Gillett from nearby Shawano County and other local Wisconsin farmers. Construction began shortly thereafter with track-laying stretching out west along the former Milwaukee Road's grade from Sturgeon Bay to Kewaunee. The route eventually reached further south into Door County to Baileys Harbor near its completion in 1893.
Purpose of AW
Throughout its history, the AW provided reliable freight service to small farms located between Sturgeon Bay and Kewaunee primarily within Door County but also extending southward into Shawano, Marinette and Oconto Counties as well as northward into Brown County's Denmark area which includes Tisch Mills where passenger operations were conducted until 1955 when they ended due to not being profitable anymore. In addition to transporting local agricultural products such as cheese, lumber, grains and livestock feed throughout this region of northeastern Wisconsin; the AW also provided access via rail ferries allowing travelers to get back-and-forth between Detroit/Chicago-bound trains via ferryboat service towards Escanaba at Michigan's Upper Peninsula shoreline.
