RAP stands for rapid atrial pacing, which is a medical procedure that uses pacemakers to stimulate the atria of the heart and create an artificial heartbeat.

Rapid atrial pacing is typically used to address certain irregular heartbeats, known as arrhythmias, or blockages that prevent proper bloodflow from occurring. It may also be recommended following a heart attack in order to restore normal function.

During rapid atrial pacing, a doctor will attach electrodes to the surface of your chest and attach the other end of these electrodes to a pacemaker-like device. This device will then send electrical impulses through the electrodes that cause your atria to contract with each impulse. The contractions mimic those that would take place during a natural heartbeat.

As with any surgery or medical procedure, there are some risks associated with rapid atrial pacing; however, these risks are typically minimal and most patients experience no major complications from the treatment. Some potential risks include infection, puncture of surrounding organs or tissues due to misplaced electrodes, and blood clots forming on the electrodes themselves.

Recovery time for rapid atrial pacing is usually short depending on how extensive it was required for you; it generally only takes about 24 hours for feeling fully recovered after receiving this treatment. Depending on your individual case and condition prior to treatment though, additional rest and lifestyle changes may still be necessary afterwards in order for full recovery.
