Avascular necrosis can be caused by injury to the bone, certain medical conditions such as lupus or diabetes, long-term steroid use, alcoholism, radiation therapy and diseases that affect the arteries.

Common AVN signs and symptoms include joint pain and tenderness, stiffness in a joint that worsens over time, decreased range of motion in a joint and deformity in a joint.

To diagnose AVN, your doctor will typically order an X-ray or MRI imaging scan to look for any evidence of bone damage or death. Your doctor may also order laboratory tests to check for other conditions that can cause similar symptoms.

Treatment for avascular necrosis depends on how advanced the condition is, but common treatments include rest and protection from further injury, physical therapy to help restore movement and strength; medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; surgical procedures; and stem cell therapies.

To help reduce your risk for developing AVN you should avoid smoking cigarettes or using other tobacco products; limit your alcohol consumption; exercise regularly; maintain a healthy weight; eat nutritious foods; pay attention to which medications you are taking;and be mindful when engaging in activities that put extra strain on your joints (e.g., skiing).
