What is R&B?

Rhythm and Blues (or R&B as it is popularly known) is an American musical genre that combines elements from gospel music, blues and jazz into one unique sound. The term was first coined by Billboard Magazine back in 1949 to describe the then-new sound of Black American music that had begun to emerge in the late 1940s. The singers of this new sound had diverse influences including gospel choirs, big bands and blues musicians such as Muddy Waters. They were characterized by their soulful vocal stylings and passion for improvisation over traditional song structures.

The golden age of R&B lasted from roughly the mid-1950s up until the 1980s when disco began to dominate radio airwaves. Early R&B artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, James Brown and Stevie Wonder created some of the most vibrant songs ever recorded during this time period which have since been immortalized as classics. As a result of its popularity amongst African Americans in America during this time period it became associated with Black culture particularly throughout the civil rights movement which saw an ever increasing level of acceptance for R&B across America.

Impact Of R&B

Since its inception, R&B has been an important part of not just American but also global music culture with many influential artists branching out into different genres or taking influence from others around them while still holding onto their roots within Rhythm & Blues. For example 1960s Soul artist Sam Cooke had a major impact on both pop & rock music during his career with his innovative blend of Gospel & Pop sensibilities influencing aspiring singer-songwriters all over the world including Bob Dylan who even named Cooke as one of his main inspirations when he started out making records himself. Similarly much modern Hip Hop & Rap can be traced back to earlier generations who experimented with incorporating samples taken from classic R&B tracks into their own beats creating entirely new sounds which have inspired many since then including contemporary Hip Hop stars such as Kendrick Lamar & Drake amongst many others who continue to blaze trails within their own musical fields by combining elements from both old & new musical traditions respectfully together resulting in fresh sounds for modern audiences to get excited about discovering!
