What does AVL mean in LABORATORY

The AVL carries out research in various areas including sensor fusion, artificial intelligence, machine learning, perception algorithms, control systems, guidance systems and mapping and localization. Additionally, the lab collaborates with external partners to develop custom hardware for autonomous vehicles and carries out hardware testing for prototypes.

The AVL develops artificial intelligence systems specifically designed to ensure the safety of passengers on board autonomous vehicles. This includes developing technologies such as accident avoidance systems, emergency braking systems and collision warning systems which are all actively tested at the lab.

The Autonomous Vehicle Laboratory is a multi-disciplinary partnership between universities, governments, industry organizations and government research institutions who collaborate to achieve their common goals in terms of safe autonomous vehicles.

The AVL develops custom hardware for use on autonomous vehicles including sensor technology such as cameras and LIDARs as well as computer vision algorithms for object detection. Additionally, the lab also develops custom electronics for data logging and communication between components of autonomous vehicle test vehicles.

Tests include track simulations where different driving scenarios are simulated using real-world conditions while assessing driver performance in terms of reaction time or accuracy rate among other parameters; road tests involve testing an automated vehicle under varying conditions on public roads; off-road tests assess how various terrain surfaces affect an automated vehicle's ability to navigate accurately; finally software validation involves thorough testing prior to production in order to ensure product reliability.
