History

Queretaro (or “QRO”) has a long and rich history that dates back thousands of years before its conquest by the Spanish in 1531. The earliest inhabitants were mostly hunters and gatherers with some cultivating maize as well. After the fall of Tenochtitlan in 1521, Queretaro was conquered by Hernan Cortes and became part of the Spanish Empire. Since then, Queretaro has been an important city in Mexico's history, playing a significant role during both the War of Independence and the Mexican-American War. Today it is a major economic center for Central Mexico and is one of the fastest growing cities in all of Latin America.

Geography

Queretaro City is situated within 'El Bajio' region at 1,800 meters above sea level near Cerro Gordo Mountain. It enjoys warm climates year round with temperatures ranging between 16 to 28°C (60 to 82°F). QRO spans across 573 km2 making it one of the largest cities in Mexico. Queretaro City itself contains 16 boroughs or neighborhoods that form its inner core while outlying areas can be found scattered around central Mexico.
