What does QMQ3 mean in NAVY

The primary responsibility of a Quartermaster Petty Officer 3rd Class is to manage navigation operations for vessels, including plotting courses and preparing charts. In addition, they are responsible for assisting with personnel assignments related to the vessel’s management and operation, monitoring vessel's safety equipment such as life rafts and survival gear, and providing instruction on navigational theory.

A Quartermaster Petty Officer 3rd Class needs to be qualified in the Navy Enlisted Classification system as a 7315 (Quartermaster). In addition, they must have mastered basic navigation principles, be able to proficiently operate navigational tools and computers, and have an understanding of communication skills necessary for working in teams.

Quartermaster Petty Officers can serve on any ship or vessel that requires navigational services. This includes battleships, submarines, aircraft carriers, frigates, small boats, cruisers, fleet support ships and specialty vessels. They may also serve ashore in various administrative capacities.

After completing basic recruit training in the Navy or Naval Reserves most Quartermasters attend specialized “C” school to become certified in their profession. This involves classroom work as well as hands-on experience under supervision so students learn how to properly use navigational tools and equipment while safely operating vessels.

After serving two years at this rank with satisfactory performance and fulfillment of certain qualifications such as passing exams or demonstrating proficiency in certain areas one may apply for promotion to the next level which is 1st Class. Upon successful completion of the duties outlined above some quartermasters may be assigned additional responsibilities such as acting as an instructor or mentor for less experienced crewmembers or performing more administrative work depending upon their command's needs.
